TRIVIA
- Technical specs according to the label: IBM & COMPATIBLES. 286 Minimum. 3.5" 1.44 MB disks.
IBM floppy version (3.5") |
- It’s the first box to not have the system/specs label covering the left spine and the front cover but the spine and the bottom. The bottom part includes far more imformation.
Spec label at the bottom |
- “Disk trade-in offer enclosed. See bottom panel for details.” Yes, the bottom panel lets you know that 5.25″ 1.2 MB disks are available for $5.00 extra using the trade-in card inside.
Trade-in form |
- Essentially the same box also came out for IBM DOS CD-ROM (“Enhanced Edition”) and Macintosh (with different spec labels).
- A limited edition of the CD-ROM version came packaged in a tall, vertical prism shaped package that is a highly sought-after collectible and commands top dollar when sold on eBay.1
“Triangle box” release (CD-ROM only) |
- 2023 saw the arrival of a new collector's edition big box for the
DOTT Remastered.2
Limited Run version (2023) |
-
The box background pattern is a take on Purple Tentacle (colors inversed).
- The box mentions Maniac Mansion in the title but the game is only a lose sequel to Maniac Mansion (the mansion, Green and Purple, the Edisons, Bernard; Razor was supposed to come back but did not make the final cut).3
Logo on the front cover | Maniac Mansion logo on the spines |
- “A cartoon adventure by Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman”: While Schafer’s name is listed first on the box, their names are reversed in order in their two appearances in the opening credits. Both played equal roles as project leaders.
- “Comes with the original, award-winning classic: Maniac Mansion, as a game within a game.” Absolutely, if you use the computer in Weird Ed's bedroom, the original PC version of Maniac Mansion from 1988 (non-enhanced) will launch!
- There are two versions of the box out there: one with the mansion, one without.4 The latter cannot be linked to any specific release.
Box cover with no mansion on the hill |
- It’s the second box within this SCUMM series without "original" box art (it’s basically the in-game art). The first one being Indy 3.
- The box art was created by the game’s lead artist, stylist and background artist Peter Chan.5 It was inspired by Chuck Jones, Duck Dodgers, and Whats Opera, Doc?6
Concept artist Peter Chan (circa 2015)7 |
- His signatuare can found on the front cover next to Purple (the initials "PC").
Peter Chan's initials |
- The front and back cover form one big picture with Hoagie's right leg cut out for the front cover.8
Full view of the box art done by Peter Chan |
- All characters seem to be out of proportion, with Hoagie too small and Laverne way too tall.
- The scene depicting the kids running away from Purple armed with a shrink-ray gun cannot be found in-game. It's old Purple (with a beard) going after a 3-headed monster version of the kids.
- Early cover art concepts showed the kids surrendering to Purple Tentacle (instead of running away).9
Early cover art |
- More early cover art design and ideas (probably also by Peter Chan).10
Early cover with kids in the time spiral |
Early cover with kids runninng |
- We want our screenshot GIFs!
Shock |
Mutation | Desperation | High Adventure |
Two Fisted Action | Twisted History | Romance |
- 7 screens total is a record so far!
-
The help letter can be made out in the Remastered version. It reads: "Dear Bernard, How are you? Purple Tentacle has mutated into an insane genius, and Doctor Fred is going to kill us both! Catch you later, Green - PS HELP!"11
Bernard reading out the letterl | Letter in Remastered version |
- There are differences between the screens printed on the back and the screens in-game (most likely due to early versions).12

Laverne once had some fancy lines coming off her Chron-O-John to indicate motion, during the sequence in which she falls through the Vortex. |

Thomas Jefferson's jacket was seemingly once a brighter red color. Minor shading differences (such as George Washington's left arm) can also be seen. |
